Are Cannabis Edibles Safe?

cannabis edibles

Yes, smoking is still the way to go, and most people smoke their cannabis over eating it any day of the week. But, in saying that, there’s a growing number of people looking to enjoy cannabis in new and exciting ways, and they simply can’t get enough of cannabis edibles.

We’re going to break down edibles, the difference between inhaling and ingesting them, and the benefits and side effects.

But first, is it safe? Yes, it is. However, it’s safe in moderation and with the knowledge that it comes with positives and negatives.

What Are Edibles?

Edibles are anything that you consume that contains THC. For example;

  • Beverages
  • Baked goods
  • Gummies
  • Candies
  • Lozenges
  • Chocolates

You can make them at home or buy them from weed dispensaries or cannabis-themed bakeries, restaurants, and cafes which infuse their products with THC. Making them at home requires the extraction of THC and mixed into the oil and/or butter used for the making of your edible.

There are four categories of edibles;

  1. Sativa = contains both CBD and THC and gives a more energetic and creative high.
  2. Indica = contains both CBD and THC and provides more sedating effects.
  3. Hybrids = a mix of Sativa and Indica also containing both CBD and THC.
  4. CBD = Pain and anxiety relief without the psychoactive qualities provided by THC as this is a CBD-only type.

Ingesting Vs. Inhaling

Ingesting cannabis means you’ll only feel it within 30 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion. The full effects, however, can only peak 4 hours after consumption. Also, the effects can last anywhere between 10 and 12 hours, with lingering effects lasting up to 24 hours.

Inhaling cannabis basically halves all these numbers. For starters, you’ll feel the effects almost instantly or momentarily. The full effects of cannabis consumed through inhaling can peak within only 30 minutes, which is far under the halfway mark that it takes cannabis ingestion to peak. The effects can last up to 6 hours after use and linger for 24 hours, similar to ingesting cannabis.

The benefits of edibles predominantly center around the enjoyment factor they provide. As a result of consuming edibles, your highs last longer and are more potent. This could be a downside, depending on who you are in some cases. Beyond the high, it’s easily available and perfectly fine to consume just about anywhere. So if you’re somewhere, that won’t allow the smoking of weed, at least you’ve got something!

Side Effects

There’s a laundry list of side effects associated with consuming weed through the consumption of edibles. However, it’s essential to understand that everyone is different and therefore reacts differently. Some of the side effects include;

  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Vomiting
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Respiratory depression
  • Paranoia
  • Psychotic episodes
  • Impaired motor ability
  • Heart problems (ranging from irregular heartbeat to heart attack).
